As a recovering addict, the last thing you want is to live in an unhappy, unhealthy environment after you get home from rehab. The thing is, there are physical things that can make the environment you are living in bad for you and make it difficult for you to stay on the path to recovery. During your intensive outpatient treatment and even afterward, you need a good home to live in to keep you on the straight and narrow. Below you can find a few ways to create a green, healthy, happy home to recover in.

Grow Plants Indoors

Live plants around a home not only improve the air quality, but they’re also good for calming the mind as well. The plants act as natural air filters. Some of them even combat the natural pollutants that emit from carpet, furniture, and even your electronics. Boston ferns, spider plants, rubber plants, and palm trees are great plants to have indoors. They help you keep your home healthy and green at the same time. 

 

Get an Air Purifier 

A stuffy, unventilated home is a terrible place to live, especially if you are recovering from an illness or are addiction. Air pollution significantly impacts your health and makes it hard to breathe. Clean air can be had when the windows aren’t open by getting an air purifier. 

An air purifier also filters out the tiniest particles that you can’t eliminate any other way. It’ll also make your home smell better, and you breathe easier. 

 

Clean, Clean, Clean 

The best way to make sure that your home is healthy, happy, and green when you’re recovering is to make sure that it’s clean and neat. Not only does keeping your home clean have great health benefits, but it’s also even a way to get the exercise you need as a recovering addict. 

Not only will your home be clean and great smelling, but it’ll also give you something productive to do with your time as well. 

 

Ban Smoking

For you and your home to be as healthy as you need to be for recovery, it’s a good idea to ban smoking inside of your home. Nicotine filters into the rooms, settling on your walls, your carpets, and your furniture. 

The smoke makes your rooms stink and is very unhealthy for you and your family to breathe in and can be a trigger for some recovering addicts. It’s best to make everyone, including yourself, smoke outside of your home for a happy, healthy, green environment.  

 

Plant an Edible Garden

This idea works two-fold when you’re a recovering addict. An edible garden will make sure you have healthy food to eat and give you a hobby, which is recommended when you’re in recovery. It’s even better if you plant an edible garden and stay away from toxic chemicals to treat and grow it, making it even healthier for you and your family and better for the environment as well. 

 

Get a Pet 

There have been many health benefits associated with owning a pet, both physical and emotional. Just make sure that you keep the dog hair at bay and have a place for the pet to use the bathroom. It’s not only a great way to make your home healthy and happy, but pets are recommended for recovering addicts all the time. 

These are just a few ways to make your home healthier, happier, and green oasis when you’re a recovering addict. It’s important to resist temptation and stay away from your triggers when you’re healing, but it’s also important to recover in a place where it’s healthy to do so.
