The Banbury based firm has consistently pushed its ‘Juice Made Mindfully’ campaign over the last three years, saving a grand total of 261 tonnes of plastic during this time – including 109 tonnes in 2023 alone.

In addition to its sustainability efforts, Juice prides itself on actively encouraging wellness and mindfulness amongst its staff. Founder and CEO, Jolyon Bennett, promotes a healthy lifestyle and as a yoga enthusiast himself, introduced free yoga classes for all employees in 2022.

That isn’t the case. Self-care and mental health provisions are an important aspect of providing treatment for an elderly loved one. You can’t do a good job of handling someone else’s problems unless you are also taking care of your own.

Establish clear boundaries that reflect your comfort level with the situation. That could mean something simple, like establishing specific time frames for when you will be available to offer assistance. Depending on the layout of your home, it could even mean dividing up space.

There is no right or wrong way to cohabitate with an elderly parent. Keep things kind and caring, but make sure that you recognize and validate your need for personal space.

There is a good chance that your aging parent will feel the same way and appreciate these boundaries. Keep in mind— they have lived independently for decades. This will be a difficult transition for them as well. Opportunities for autonomy may be exactly what they want.

Practice Self-Care

Having an elderly parent move in with you can be very stressful. Not only are you losing part of your home and a lot of your free time, but you are also forced to accept the fact that someone you love is no longer at their peak health. That can be a difficult realization for many people to deal with.

Self-care can help make this transition easier. That means giving your body the things it needs to be healthy and productive. Health stuff. Good sleep, and proper nutrition. Exercise.

It can also mean adapting holistic habits that naturally allow you to reduce and manage stress throughout the day. This could include things like yoga and meditation, but it also may mean less formal activities.

For example, daily walks outside or quality time with a pet are all good ways to naturally trigger the chemicals in your brain that are responsible for stress management. So pet your dog in the name of good health!

Utilize a Support System

Any support system. Naturally, this will look different for everyone. If you have dependable siblings or cousins, they may be a good support resource— whether that means asking them to pitch in around the house or just lending an ear when you need to vent.

Your spouse and children may also be enlisted to help make this time a little bit easier. The important thing is that you do not place the entire burden of responsibility on yourself. Taking care of another person is difficult work. The more help you get, the better the care your aging parent will ultimately receive.

Recognize Your Limitations

Beyond thinking about your needs it is also important to be honest about what you are capable of doing. Keep in mind that elder care is a literal profession. People do it as their full-time job. They receive training for it and get specially licensed.

You, most likely, are not one of those people. You probably have other obligations, including your profession, your friends, and possibly even a family of your own to look after. You can’t do everything, particularly if your loved one suffers from chronic illness.

It’s important to recognize where the breadth of your responsibility ends and determine how you can bridge care gaps for your loved one. For example, are you completely uncomfortable administering care that could be classified as medical?

That’s a very reasonable limitation. However, if your parent requires ongoing support in the form of say, blood pressure/oxygen monitoring, medication management, dietary provisions, etc. you may need to attain additional professional care to provide at-home support.

This is expensive but there are ways to make it financially feasible.

Once you’ve identified what you can do and what you can’t, there will always be ways to work around the gaps. Sometimes that will mean enlisting the help of other family members. Other times, it might mean looking into third-party support.

Expert nutritionist Olivia’s top tips for a healthier lifestyle at work:

  1. Aim to drink 8 glasses of water a day, 4 or more during work
  2. If you’re a regular exerciser or work in warm climates, drink more water
  3. Keep coffee consumption to 4 cups or less a day
  4. Avoid drinking caffeine 2 hours after waking and after lunch
  5. Try to get 7+ hours of sleep a night to avoid impaired cognitive function
  6. Stand up and walk around the office for 5 minutes every hour
  7. Make sure your lunches are filling and nutritious to avoid snacking
  8. Ensure your lunch contains lean protein, 2 servings of fruit or veg, wholegrain carbs and a source of plant-based fat
  9. Don’t skip lunch and other important meals
  10. Consider your snacking habits and identify if you need a more filling lunch

Stay Hydrated at Work

We asked survey respondents how much water they’re consuming at work on a daily basis. A shocking 47% almost half of respondents shared that they drink 2 glasses of water or less (including no water) at work!

Nutritionist Olivia Bell Macdonald shared that on average, it is recommended that males should be drinking roughly 10 cups of water per day, which is the equivalent to roughly 2.6L. For females, it is slightly less; 8 cups of water or the equivalent to 2.1L.

With the average time spent at work equating to around 8 hours, Brits should be considering drinking a minimum of 4 glasses to stay healthy and hydrated.

Managing Caffeine for Focus

Preferring a caffeine boost over water, over 44% of Brits shared that the indulge in 3+ cups of tea or coffee a day.

Our expert revealed that adults consume no more than 400mg of caffeine per day which is the equivalent to about 2 espressos, 4 instant coffees or 8 cups of tea. While caffeine has its benefits, including enhancing focus, productivity and arousal, when consumed in excess and at the wrong time of day, its side effects far outweigh the benefits. 

Where possible, avoid consuming caffeine until at least 2 hours after waking. This allows you to take advantage of the body’s natural cortisol surge (helping to regulate your sleep-wake cycle) in the morning and maximise your response to the caffeine once the cortisol has tapered off. In addition, caffeine is known to delay sleep initiation and sleep intensity so it would be wise to avoid consuming caffeine after lunch for this reason. 

With 16% sharing they don’t drink tea or coffee and 15% sharing they don’t drink water, it’s not a surprise that busy Brits will be looking for a quick sugar fix in the form of sugary pop and caffeinated energy drinks.

Sleep Well, Work Better

Expert nutritionist Olivia suggested that ideally, most people should be aiming for between 7-9 hours of sleep a night. 

60% of our survey respondents reported having between 6-7 hours of sleep with 18%, almost one in five, reporting that they get 6 hours or less.

Adequate sleep, both time and intensity, is vital to optimal functioning and research shows that even just one night of poor sleep has the potential to lead to negative physical and mental health outcomes. 

In the short term, some examples of negative effects of inadequate sleep include; impaired cognitive function, ie. difficulties with memory and concentration and inability to perform complex tasks. As well as increases in hunger and preferences for sweet foods.

Take Breaks to Boost Productivity

By law, workers have the right to one uninterrupted 20 minute rest break during their working day if they work more than 6 hours a day. 

But when surveyed, a shocking one in ten Brits revealed that they only take 15 minutes or less.

Slightly cheekier, or employer permitting, almost one in five Brits enjoy the luxury of a lunch break longer than 60 minutes.

Olivia shared that the optimal number and length of work breaks in a day will vary depending on individual preferences and what you are optimising for, e.g. happiness or productivity. It is thought that employers who encourage flexibility and autonomy in how their employees structure their work breaks will elicit the best outcomes in terms of employee satisfaction and happiness, which in turn, has strong links to productivity. 

Food Choices and the Cost of Living

When we asked survey respondents what they have for lunch, a whopping 54% shared that they bring a packed lunch from home. With eating-out prices rising and the cost of a luxurious lunch climbing, it’s no surprise that workers are making their own lunch.

Interestingly, a survey we conducted last year found that taking homemade lunches to work features in the top 5 of 2023’s New Year’s resolutions with almost 1 in 3 (32%) of us having set a goal to bring in more homemade lunches.

Our nutritionist expert revealed that generally speaking, a packed lunch has the potential to be better quality if it is filled with home-prepared food compared to a store-bought or takeaway lunch. 

Our survey revealed that a shocking one in twelve admitted to skipping lunch completely, with 7% of us simply snacking or grazing and not having a proper meal.

Nutritionist Olivia shared that skipping lunch, or any meal for that matter is essentially depriving your body of essential nutrients and energy that it needs to perform everyday tasks, both internally and externally. Skipping lunch is likely to result in drops in energy and therefore reduced cognitive function and productivity. In addition to, increases in hunger and cravings which can make it difficult to manage snacking and general food intake later in the day. 

Top tips from a Nutritionist for creating a balanced and filling packed lunch include:

  1. A source of lean protein that is roughly the size of your palm. Protein aids satiation and will help keep you feeling fuller for longer.
  2. At least 2 servings (2 cups) of mixed fruit and or veg will go a long way in providing you with the vitamins and minerals that you need on a daily basis. In addition, fruits and veg are a great source of dietary fibre, which again contributes to filling you up and healthy bowel movements.
  3. A source of carbohydrates, preferably wholegrain. Carbohydrates are your brain’s main source of energy and will help to fuel your day’s activities and tasks.
  4. A source of plant-based fat, again contributing to feeling full and having energy throughout the rest of the day.

Smart Snacking

Speaking of snacking, we asked Brits what best described their snacking habits at work. An interesting third of Brits revealed that they bring their own with some having a dedicated snack draw for their tasty treats.

With more of us becoming conscious of our eating habits and looking for cost-effective ways to stay fuller for longer and many employers offering free snack schemes, 29% of respondents shared that they opt for healthy options such as fruit and veg.

Interestingly, 28% shared that they don’t snack at all. Great for those who are looking to ditch the high-calorie and sugar-filled treats, but maybe not the best option for those who have admitted to not having lunch at all!

Expert nutritionist Olivia shared that snacking is neither inherently good nor bad. The important things to consider here are, what you are snacking on and what your intentions behind the snacking are. If you’re snacking because you’re hungry, that’s fine. But if you’re snacking because you’re bored, there is probably some work to be done here. Similarly, if you are relying on snacks throughout your day, it may be because your main meals are not balanced nor filling enough, in which case it is worth focusing your attention on them rather than the snacks themselves. 

Exercise at Work

Expert nutritionist Olivia states that regular, short bouts of exercise will produce not only positive physical benefits but mental health benefits too, including improved mood, energy levels, productivity and focus. 

Employees who work a typical desk job should try and get in some exercise and fresh air where possible. This can be achieved in a number of ways, from using a portion of your lunch break to get out and get some fresh air to standing up and walking around the office for 5 minutes every hour. 

When we asked our respondents what best described their activity levis at work a quarter of Brits revealed that their job allows them to sit down for most of their day and they don’t do any additional exercise.

On the other hand, 20%, one in five Brits, shared that their job requires them to walk around and/or be on their feet all/most of the day. The same premise applies if you’re in a more physically demanding job. Take regular breaks, go outside and take time to sit down and rest.

Hoarding might seem like a niche condition that you’d never encounter. However, statistics show that it affects around 5% of the population in the UK. This means that even though you may not realise it, there could be someone in your life who struggles with this condition and requires intervention to stop it from becoming a danger to their health and safety, both physical and mental.

Understanding the psychology behind hoarding can help in identifying signs in friends, acquaintances, or loved ones who may be experiencing it.

What can cause hoarding?

Like any other psychological disorder, hoarding can have its origins in multiple places. This can be anything from major life events to the biological makeup of your brain. For example, if someone grows up experiencing poverty throughout their childhood, there’s a chance they could grow to become a hoarder through a perceived need to save money by refusing to replace old objects or maybe finding a future use for them.

This can be in the form of clothes and shoes, old newspapers or books, mail, and even food and ingredients.

An important factor in finding out whether someone in your life (or even yourself) is a hoarder or if they’re just a bit messy and pressed for time, leaving spring cleaning to a later date, is distress at the notion of throwing away needless items or even in how they’re arranged and stored in the home.

Anxious emotions that occur around throwing away items with no sentimental value is a telltale sign of a hoarding disorder beginning to establish itself. So, what’s the best way of supporting those in your life who may be suffering from this condition?

Supporting sufferers

For anyone looking to support someone who suffers from this condition, empathy is a crucial part of the approach, as it’s not as easy as finding the nearest 240L wheelie bin and starting to throw things out.

This is a serious psychological disorder, often connected with deep-routed experiences from childhood, and needs to be handled with sensitivity. Those who struggle with hoarding may feel shame and embarrassment because of the number of items they possess, so emphasising your support with kindness can help reassure them.

In severe cases, encouraging them to speak to a GP to discuss the options available provides more detail from a professional perspective. From there, they may be able to be referred through the NHS for therapy. It is important to encourage those in your life who may suffer from this, as it allows them to work through difficult memories and experiences from the past that led to their condition developing.

And then comes the hardest part. The clear up. First things first, professionals advise that large-scale clean-ups are ill-advised. As with any therapy, it’s important to break it down into smaller and more digestible portions. That way, it’s easier to scale up how much you do over time. New Research into the Impact of Microplastics and Nanoplastics on Human Health is Urgently Required Due to ‘Significant Threat’ to Human Health

Research summary:

  • Plastic traces have been found in human placenta, brain and lung tissue, blood samples, and faeces. 
  • Absorption of plastic traces can trigger oxidative stress and reactive oxygen production, leading to damage and even cell death. This can cause dysfunction and illness in the affected body tissue. Oxidative stress can play a role in the development of serious health conditions, such as Parkinson’s, cancer and diabetes.
  • The impact of secondary particles on human health is unknown, even though these comprise the bulk of microplastic and nanoplastic (MPs/NPs) pollution. 
  • There has been limited research to date into human exposure to NPs or the impact of plastics other than polystyrene, and the effect of plastic particles containing common additives or environmental pollutants is still unknown.

A new metastudy published in Cambridge Prisms: Plastics by Cambridge University Press, has identified a body of evidence demonstrating the negative impact of microplastics and nanoplastics (MPs and NPs) on human health and identifying the limitations of current research. 

‘Mitochondria as a Target of Micro- and Nanoplastic Toxicity’ by Dal Yöntem of Koç University and Müfide Aydoğan Ahbab of the University of Health Sciences Türkiye, reviewed 130 published research studies and identified a body of information which should motivate regulators to reassess the environmental and health risks associated with MP/NP pollution. The researchers are now calling for further, urgent research into the effects of plastic pollution on human health and a renewed focus on reducing plastic use at both individual and national level. 

MPs/NPs are small enough to be inhaled through our breath, where they bypass biological barriers, enter our bloodstream and are internalised by mitochondria. As the ‘power plants’ in every human cell, mitochondria play an essential role by creating energy to drive cellular function across all human biological processes. The mitochondria are extremely sensitive to damage, and if impaired, the cell cannot effectively carry out its functions. 

MPs and NPs are thought to pose a ‘significant threat’ to mitochondrial health and function, leading to an increased risk of a wide range of health conditions, such as neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular diseases like strokes. 

MPs/NPs are generated from plastic waste and can be found in two forms. Primary particles are usually plastic microbeads used in products such as toothpaste, sunscreen and exfoliating face wash. Secondary particles are formed when plastic waste is degraded through the sun’s radiation, the action of wind and waves, or product wear and tear when items like car tyres are used. Secondary MPs/NPs are more abundant in the environment due to the volume of plastic waste. Both primary and secondary MPs have been detected across the globe in our oceans, soil, air and living organisms in our food chain and even in bottled and tap water.  

Although MP/NP pollution is considered a global problem, its potential risks to human health are far from known. The full extent of human exposure to NPs has been limited so far by the lack of suitable methods to detect particles of this size. Further research to profile the impact of nanoplastic exposure would be an important first step to identifying critical levels of exposure or toxicity and developing methods to combat the damage done to the body.

Evidence suggests that MPs/NPs can induce mitochondrial dysfunction, primarily through the generation of oxidative stress, which can result in reduced production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is every living cell’s source of energy. This causes disruption of the cellular processes and can lead to cell death. MPs/NPs have also been found to physically interact with mitochondria, causing structural damage and contributing to functional impairment. These effects can, in turn, trigger a cascade of cellular responses, from inflammation to apoptosis, contributing to the overall toxicity of MPs/NPs. In addition, exposure to MPs/NPs may disrupt the dynamic processes that maintain mitochondrial health. Emerging research suggests that MPs/NPs could disrupt mitochondrial biogenesis, potentially decreasing mitochondrial mass and further impairing cellular health and function.

Yöntem and Aydoğan Ahbab’s meta-study identifies significant gaps in the current research literature. In addition to discovering that little is currently known about the presence of NPs in the human body, they also found that most research is focused on primary MPs and NPs, which have a smooth shape. Particles without smooth surfaces are known to have a greater negative effect on human cells than those with smooth surfaces. Secondary particles form a wide variety of shapes as their structures deteriorate and their properties change over time, but their impact on human health has not yet been assessed. 

In addition, existing research has primarily focused on polystyrene (PS) plastic, which is used for a huge range of items, from plastic packaging to even road construction. This is not the only plastic polymer used and present in the environment. To date, nothing is known about the impact of other plastic types, the effects of common additives such as stabilisers and colourants, or the impact of plastic which has absorbed other environmental pollutants.

The Turkish research team, Dal Yöntem and Müfide Aydoğan Ahbab commented: “If more people were aware of the potential threat of MPs and NPs pollution, and the associated increased risk of life-threatening conditions like cancer and the fatal form of dementia, Alzheimer’s, they would almost certainly call for and take more action. Everybody needs to look at their own use of plastic products. Governments and organisations need to develop policies that reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable alternatives. This collective effort will require cross-disciplinary collaboration encompassing environmental science, toxicology, public health, policymaking, and more. This is no longer just about the impact on our planet; we urgently need to find out more about MPs and NPs to safeguard our own and future generations’ health.”
