GHP May 2017

14 GHP / May 2017 , intervention, changes in bone mineral density in the spine and femoral neck were detected by DXA scans. As a secondary outcome, biomarkers for bone formation and resorption (P1NP and 1CTP) were assessed. The initial results of this study indicate an anabolic effect — as they revealed a pronounced increase in bone mineral density after FORTIBONE® supplementation in subjects suffering from osteopenia or osteoporosis. In the femoral neck, a significant improvement in bone mineral density was observed. The bone mineral density in the spine showed a significant improvement at the end of the treatment phase. Hence, this new data supports the assumption that specific Bioactive Collagen Peptides® seem to be an interesting option for the prevention, treatment and adjuvant treatment of degenerative bone diseases. 4. Healthy skin from within Most of us begin life with healthy, flawless skin. However, environmental, internal and hereditary factors, as well as the normal process of aging, proceed to undo what was ours at birth. Collagen plays an essential role in keeping skin healthy as we age. Along with elastin and proteoglycans, it is produced in the deeper layer of the skin, the dermis, and together, these molecules play a key role in skin elasticity and resistance. Collagen, in particular, is what gives the skin its firm structure. As beauty and aging is an important issue for most women, beauty-from-within concepts based on collagen peptides offer a number of opportunities in the growing cosmeceutical and nutricosmetic markets. 7 Women trust collagen Today’s consumers are increasingly keen to understand how beauty-from-within products work. This means higher levels of interest in products with the greatest amount of scientific research and evidence to support them. In a recent consumer survey a total of 1500 women aged 25–65 years were interviewed in Germany, Spain and the USA about their perceptions and acceptance of collagen and products containing it. 8 The research found that more than 80% of the participants associated collagen with beauty and most considered a beauty-from-within concept based on collagen peptides to be trustworthy and more effective than topical applications. Furthermore, the subjects had clear ideas about the ideal application forms of such nutricosmetics: the ingredients should be easy to consume, readily absorbed by the body and neutral in taste and odour. Collagen peptides (VERISOL®) fulfil all of these requirements. With their special amino acid composition, they influence the skin’s collagen metabolism directly from the inside. Backed by science The considerable effects of VERISOL® on epidermal and dermal skin structures, which result in enhanced overall appearance, have been scientifically confirmed in two placebo controlled human clinical studies. 9 , 10 After just 4 weeks – and even more clearly after 8 weeks on completion of the first study – the women who took VERISOL® showed significantly improved skin elasticity in contrast to the placebo group. This effect was even more pronounced in women aged over 50. Furthermore, skin hydration in these older women was considerably increased, indicating that VERISOL® treatment stimulates the regeneration of dermal matrix molecules. In the second, follow-up trial, subjects’ eye wrinkle volumes were distinctly reduced by 35 per cent after 8 weeks of ingestion. Findings suggest that this effect is caused by an increase in important dermal elastic fibre components, such as pro- collagen, elastin and biglycan. For instance, in suction blister fluids, 60 per cent more pro-collagen accumulated with VERSIOL® treatment than in the placebo group. These results prove that taking collagen peptides can lead to a significant and visible improvement in skin appearance. A new approach to cellulite treatment? These previous findings suggested that oral supplementation with collagen peptides may also have a positive impact on cellulite-affected skin. Cellulite is a complex problem that affects 85% of women over the age of 20. It occurs mainly on the thighs, buttocks and abdomen, and is characterised by an orange peel appearance. Very few scientific studies on existing cellulite treatments actually examine the extent to which they improve the condition. Hence, the successful treatment of cellulite will ultimately depend on an improved understanding of the pathophysiology of cellulite adipose tissue. Research published in the Journal of Medicinal Food has investigated the ability of GELITA’s specific collagen peptides VERISOL® to improve the skin morphology of cellulite-affected areas of the body in normal and overweight women. 11 In the double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 105 women between 24 and 50 years of age received a daily dose of 2.5 g of collagen peptides or a placebo (maltodextrin). After only 3 months of treatment, a statistically significant cellulite score reduction was observed. At the end of the 6-month study period, a mean reduction of approximately 9% (compared with the placebo) was determined in subjects with a normal BMI. This improvement was also recorded in overweight participants with a BMI of >25, although the beneficial effect was less pronounced. In terms of skin waviness, an average and statistically significant reduction of 8% was observed via 3D skin surface profile measurement after 6 months of treatment. This was even more pronounced in the normal BMI study group, with a decrease in thigh skin waviness of 11.1%. Moreover, dermal density was significantly improved compared with the placebo. After the treatment period, the skin tissue became measurably more compact, indicating a strengthening of the connective tissue.
