We speak to Founder Chad Zelensky to find out more about the brand’s incredible journey to success as it wins this incredible award. Lowen’s Natural Skincare is a familyowned and operated skincare company based in Calgary, Alberta. Conceived by a veteran pharmacist committed to using organic, fair-trade, and/or locally sourced ingredients, Lowen’s creates unique skincare products that are safe, effective, longlasting, and affordable. After unsuccessful trials of commercially available diaper rash remedies, registered pharmacist Chad Zelensky used his pharmaceutical knowledge and clinical experience to develop an innovative natural diaper balm using unconventional, unrefined, high-quality, and locallysourced ingredients. In time, Chad developed a formula that resolved his daughter’s diaper rash within days – and it never came back. “We knew other parents faced the same challenge we did and wanted to help them discover our product so that they too could prevent and treat their children’s rash,” explains Chad. “With that lofty goal in mind, Lowen’s Natural Skincare – named after my daughter – was born!” After launching its flagship Butter Balm, through extensive research and tenacity, Chad expanded his product line to include a variety of other balms, lotions, cleansers, scrubs, hair care, and creams. The company is thriving and the natural and hypoallergenic products are all formulated under four core principles, these being: • Safe for us = Safe for you • Do no Harm • Keeping it simple • Sensible sourcing “We formulate our products using evidence-based, peerreviewed, and personallytested ingredients to ensure they are safe for you and your family,” Chad continues. “We ensure that our ingredients are thoroughly evaluated for safety, effectiveness, environmental impact, as well as animal welfare by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).” None of the products at Lowen’s Natural Skincare are tested on animals nor does it purchase any ingredients that have been tested on animals. Furthermore, Lowen’s has also been vetted by PETA and is listed in their Cruelty Free Company database. Instead, Chad formulates his products with ‘hard-working ingredients.’ “What this means is that any single ingredient can provide multiple benefits within a particular product. This keeps our ingredients list to a minimum number of “simple” components. We source local, certified organic and/or Fairtrade ingredients whenever possible and continually review and refine our practices to adhere to the above. If we are unable to find an ingredient close to home, we expand our search to find unrefined, organic, fair-trade ingredients from other communityminded social enterprises.” Recently, the company was rewarded for its hard work, diligence and commitment by being recognised in the Global Health & Pharma Biotechnology Awards 2022 and named Best Natural Skincare Product Brand in Western Canada. Today, Chad continues to investigate and create new products to meet the needs of his family, and his customers, and it’s safe to say that the future is looking very bright indeed for this family-run operation.
