GHP November 2017 - Texas A&M

GHP / November 2017 7 Best for Health Research & Education - Texas g Due to the amount of interest in conducting exercise, nutrition, and aging related research; Texas A&M University supported development of a Human Clinical Research Facility (HCRF) that opened earlier this year. The HCRF not only serves as a new home for the ESNL but also the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity that is directed by Dr. Nicolaas Deutz. The HCRF serves as a centralized location for researchers at Texas A&M to conduct comprehensive biomedical human research. The HCRF contains facilities necessary to conduct training and rehabilitation intervention research; a large conference / lecture area; offices for faculty, staff, and research assistants; 12 beds for overnight research studies; a metabolic kitchen for feeding studies; a pharmacy compounding room for preparing ESNL, and have moved on and furthered the field of exercise and sport nutrition. Collectively, research emanating from the ESNL and students trained in the ESNL have made a significant impact on the science and practice of exercise and sport nutrition. For this reason, the ESNL is considered an international leader in exercise and sport nutrition-related research and a primary location for foundations, industry, and the federal government to consider in sponsoring this type of research. With the current regulatory environment and increased consumer expectations, the need for the dietary supplement industry to conduct research on their products in order to provide evidence-based product substantiation claims and safety profiles is essential. sterile intravenous solutions; 4 procedure / examination rooms; body composition (DEXA) and resting energy expenditure analysis rooms; a comprehensive exercise physiology testing lab; a secured data archive system; nursing station, blood/tissue processing and testing laboratory; a large biobank with 10 monitored and controlled -80°C freezers; and, a comprehensive wet lab facility (whole blood counts, serum metabolites, hormonal analyses, immune analyses, inflammatory markers, genetic analyses, stable isotope tracer metabolism analyses, gut function and nutrient absorption studies, etc. using standard clinical chemistry methodologies). In addition to the methodologies described above related to the ESNL, the HCRF also has the expertise to conduct stable isotope tracer studies to measure metabolism using stable tracers of amino acids, fatty acids and carbohydrates in order to assess anabolic response to food, digestion and absorption of nutrients, protein synthesis/ breakdown, tissue (muscle, fat) protein and fatty synthesis, and metabolic kinetic phenotyping using a 20 stable tracer mixture intravenous pulse. The HCRF conducts private and federally funded research through grants and/or contracts and has worked with leading companies in the US and abroad. HCRF researchers work with the potential sponsor to design clinical trials, obtain IRB approval to conduct the study, recruit participants, collect data, analyze results, and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed presentations and publications.
