2017 GHP - Mental Health Awards

4 GHP / September 2017 , Since its founding in 1999, Iwaki Clinic has been serving as a general Clinic, including psychiatry, internal medicine, and surgery, providing support for both mind and body of the citizens. Yasuhiro outlined the services the clinic provides, as well as how the staff works. “Alongside usual practice services, at Iwaki Clinic we provide special outpatient department for Dementia (practice by a dementia specialist, utilizing examinations of neuroimaging and neurocognitive function) and Diabetes (practice by a diabetologist). Also, we have Home Support Center for consultation such as the nursing care insurance/care service, and Medical Examination Center which provides a great variety of medical examination menus individually by our openhearted staff. Furthermore, we provide day-care for people with authorization requiring support or nursing care, and child-care for sick and convalescent children, and thus we can cope from children to the elderly. Now, we are preparing for group-home.” MHA17002 Clinical Psychiatrist of the Year 2017 – Tokushima Prefecture Yasuhiro Kaneda is a Chair of the Board of Directors, Iwaki Clinic, Anan City, located in the southern part of Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. We profiled Yasuhiro and invited him to tell us more about the clinic, discussing what makes it successful. Yasuhiro received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Tokushima, School of Medicine, Tokushima, Japan. He has been committed to a career in research, teaching, and clinical work with a major focus on psychiatry including depression, schizophrenia, and dementia. Prior to this, he was chief psychiatrist of in- and out-patient care at Tokushima University Hospital. He is a designated psychiatrist certified by Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology, and a specialist physician certified by Japanese Psychogeriatric Society, Japanese Society of Clinical Neuropsychopharmacology, and Japan Medical Association. Yasuhiro details to us the projects that the practice has focused on, emphasizing the clinic’s overall mission. “The clinic extensively has focused on neurocognitive assessment using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) and Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog), because of the extensive evidence that cognitive impairment is a core feature of the diseases, as well as a key determinant of functional outcome. Regarding the BACS, we developed the Japanese- language version (Japanese BACS), and now it has been adopted in the majority of the Psychiatric Departments of medical schools in Japan. “Ultimately, I would like to emphasize that Iwaki Clinic contributes the health maintenance and promotion for both mind and body of the citizens, without distinction of Contact: Yasuhiro Kaneda Contact Email: [email protected] Address: 11-1 Kamimizuta, Gakubara-cho, Anan-shi, Tokushima, 774-0014, Japan Phone: 0081 884 23 5600 age, living in the southern part of Tokushima.”
