Following his success in the Private Healthcare Awards 2020, we got in touch to find out more. As a graduate of Nottingham Medical School, Amar Alwitry undertook general surgical training, obtaining Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England before moving over to Ophthalmology. Having published more than 35 articles in medical literature and holding a Master’s Degree in Medical Law, Amar has the knowledge and expertise to perform the surgery his patients require. To start, Amar provided us with a brief overview of the type of work he is involved in and what truly distinguishes himself from other eye surgeons. “Since undertaking my training in the Midlands, I have settled as a Consultant Ophthalmologist aiming to provide a high standard of care for my patients. With a special interest and expertise in small incision cataract surgery, glaucoma, lid procedures and macular pathology, I believe my knowledge in these areas gives me the edge on fellow eye surgeons in the region”. As a highly experienced Oph- thalmologist, Amar is focused on putting his patients at ease prior to performing surgery as he further explains. “I genuinely care about my patients and I would like to think my sense of humour and Contact Details: Company Name: Mr Amar Alwitry Contact Name: Leisa Blewitt, PA to Mr A Alwitry Telephone Number: 01157722058/01164422081 Address: Mr Amar Alwitry’s PA, PO Box 10486, Coalville, Leicestershire, LE67 8NU Web Address: www.amaralwitry.com Feb20535 excellent bedside manner puts them at ease through potentially stressful operations. “I currently perform more than 1800 cataract and lens exchange procedures a year with complica- tion rates far below the national average, so patients can be assured that they are in good and safe hands from start to finish.” With macular degeneration being the most common cause of legal blindness in the developed world, Amar was keen to do something about this using his expertise. “Currently, I am working with a lens company to collect real world data on a relatively new intraocular lens for people with macular degeneration. Any intervention which can preserve patients’ vision for longer is a worthwhile enterprise.” As the NHS becomes more and more strained with patients requiring treatment, Amar has seen a rise in the number of people requesting private care as he goes on to explain. “I am always open and honest when people could turn to the NHS for their treatment. Without a doubt my offerings are signif- icantly more varied than those available on the NHS, however I ensure that every patient, be they private or NHS, gets the same high calibre care.” Finally, Amar gives us his thought on being awarded Ophthalmic Surgeon of the Year 2020 – UK and how he will maintain his impressively high standards. “I am delighted to have been awarded this and I remain humbled by the trust my patients have for me. I seek to reward that trust by being compassionate and delivering the care that I would expect my own parents to receive. “Without the support of my hospital staff, I could not deliver the excellent care I provide to my patients. Ultimately, I am truly grateful for their diligent work and going forward we hope to keep things this way.”
