Q2 2020

22 GHP / Q2 2020 , Forming the Backbone of the Industry Though its operations officially began in August 2008, the history of Centinel Spine is far more extensive. Now, just twelve years after the merger of two pioneeringmedical device companies, Centinel Spine is the recipient of Biotechnology Awards’ 2020 title of Leading Innovator of Spinal Surgery Products 2020. We take a closer look at the company’s past, present, and future to highlight its successes, and those that are yet to come. Centinel Spine was born in August 2008, following the successful merger-acquisition of two pioneering medical device companies: Raymedica LLC and Surgicraft LTD. Raymedica was founded in 1990, and became a recognized leader in nucleus replacement devices through the development of revolutionary products. Across an eighteen year lifespan, the company was responsible for developing and pioneering some of the most innovative technologies and surgical techniques used in spinal procedures today. Patients have had functions restored, back pain reduced, and non-invasive procedures done because of the work of Raymedica. On the other hand, Surgicraft was a UK-based company that focused on the delivery of spine-focused operations eight years earlier and, in 1988, made a revolutionary development. That development was the titanium Hartshill Horseshoe, the first Stand-Alone/No Profile ® anterior lumbar interbody fusion device in the world. As a ground-breaking device, the Hartshill Horseshoe formed the basis for future generations and variations of market-leading Integrated Interbody™ technology, known today as STALIF ® . The STALIF technology platform is built upon thirty years of clinical history with more than 75,000 devices implanted, but it remains as modern and pertinent as ever. To this day, STALIF remains the only stand-alone device that demonstrates biomechanical equivalence to anterior plate and cage constructs. After years of separate success, Raymedica and Surgicraft joined forces in August 2008, and Centinel Spine was born. Since its founding, Centinel Spine has continued the innovative work that was started by Raymedica and Surgicraft. It embraces a culture of pioneering technologies and techniques to make spinal surgery even safer than it has already been made. Today, Centinel Spine is the largest privately held spine company focused on anterior column reconstruction, providing sixteen differentiated product families that help thousands of patients around the world. Its corporate mission has not changed either, as it still aims to address spinal disease anteriorly with the widest breadth and depth of technology platforms. As a catalyst of change in the spinal market, Centinel Spine provides clinically-proven products to help patients and allow individuals with spinal issues to function daily at a high level of normality. The company’s leadership within the field of anterior column reconstruction was recently strengthened through its acquisition of the pro disc ® Total Jan20479 Disc Replacement technology platform, the most extensive cervical and lumbar motion-preserving reconstruction portfolios available today. With this latest addition, the firm continues to strengthen its unique position as the only company with comprehensive motion- preserving and fusion solutions for both cervical and lumbar anterior column reconstruction. In June, 2019, the company entered into partnership with professional athlete Tiger Woods. Woods underwent spinal fusion surgery using Centinel Spine’s STALIF M-Ti™ Anterior Lumbar Integrated Interbody fusion product in April 2017 to alleviate ongoing, debilitating pain in his back and legs. Having been the company behind Tiger Woods’ remarkable rise to the top of the golfing world once again, Centinel Spine has proven itself to be one of the finest spinal companies currently at work in the world.
