We take a closer look at Alodia and the range of services it offers. Focused on improving the lives of oncology patients, the company researches and develops products which have a direct positive impact on those undergoing invasive cancer therapies. Radiodermatitis, a condition caused by radiotherapy, results in the breakdown of the double-strand DNA of skin cells and high-grade burns that can lead to painful skin infections. Skin reactions to the treatment include extreme dryness, itching, redness, and hypersensitivity. After extensive research, Alodia discovered a bioactive ingredient capable of protecting and repairing the skin against these external irritants. Tectum-11 peptide is able to protect, repair, and regenerate the skin before, during, and after the treatment takes place. Its mechanism centres around the activation of survival and reparation cell pathways, and has been demonstrated through both in vitro and in vivo assays. The discovery of the Tectum-11 peptide led the team at Alodia to develop its Tectum Skin Care range. The range comprises products for the body, face, hands, intimate areas, and mouth. Having been on the market for over nine years, Tectum Skin Care ranks amongst the top products for the treatment of radiodermatitis. More recently, Alodia launched its new product to treat allodynia. The disease, caused by chemotherapy, results in extreme and painful responses to everyday stimuli. Regulatory Affairs Manager, Teresa Vázquez Rodríguez tells us, “An example of allodynia could be when a patient experiences extreme pain when touching anything with their hands. Even the feeling of fresh air on their hands might be unbearable. Up until now, there was no effective treatment to alleviate these symptoms. Our Alodia Creams range of dermal products provides cancer patients with a solution to these undesirable effects.” The team at Alodia are keen to collaborate with other public institutions and private companies. As such, over the years, it has developed a unique nanosystem for the treatment of pathologies such as sensory hypoacusis, osteoarthritis, lung inflammation, and otic toxicity. Teresa explains, “The nano vehicle consists of a nanoparticle with intrinsic antioxidant properties capable of encapsulating different types of drugs to treat pathologies with high efficacy. This means that the outside structure is bioactive itself. We wanted to make the most of this quality by creating a controlled delivery system that enhances the benefits of the treatments, reduces toxicity, and causes positive effects through antioxidating. As a result of this, four different drugs are being developed which use this nanostructure as a scaffold. So far results have been promising in clinical trials and in vivo testing.” In the search for active ingredients for its new dermo-cosmetics, Alodia has found plant oils to be effective in treating skin conditions due to their natural antimicrobial properties. In 2022, the company was successful in isolating extracellular vesicles (EV) from plant extracts. In vitro tests have so far shown that EVs provide a safe and effective solution to many skin problems. Alodia obtains the plants it uses for testing as bi-products from agricultural activity. This favours the preservation of nature and a circular economic model. In addition to its many accomplishments, Alodia offers a cell culture service adapted to the needs of companies and research groups around the world. Recently, the company also developed a rapid test product for difficult-to-diagnose viruses.
