27 GHP Healthcare & Pharma Awards 2022 Dr Ros Drake founded her chiropractic clinic, Drake Chiropractic from scratch in 2006. Located in Dublin, Ireland, Dr Drake’s goal is to educate her patients on many areas of holistic maternity care, advise on how to navigate the medicalised model of maternity care, and be a listening and empathetic ear for their concerns and any trauma. Pregnancy Chiropractor of the Year – ROI r Ros Drake’s chiropractic career began in 2000 with her completing her five-year Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree at the UK chiropractic college, the AECC. The treatment of an expectant mum has always been an interest which started in her undergraduate year, but it was the homebirth of her second daughter in 2013 that saw her practice thrive, with her now having treated over 500 expectant mums. Dr Drake says, “My mission is to be Ireland’s best known prenatal chiropractor, and from the recognition from Global Health & Pharma and my reputation amongst birth workers and patients, I have achieved that.” While all of her patients are taken care of, Dr Drake has concentrated her attention on the pre and postnatal patient, helping those with conditions such as pelvic girdle pain, symphysis pubis dysfunction, breech presentation, optimal foetal positioning, sciatica, birth preparation, rib pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. However, with her wish to concentrate on the pre and postnatal population more, fulfilling demand can be a significant challenge. Her current associate, Dr Ivana Koulakoff is returning to her home country shortly, but Dr Drake is in the process of finding another member of staff to fill her shoes and continue helping as many patients as possible. This hasn’t been the only challenge Dr Drake has faced recently, with it becoming particularly evident just how important it is to meet her patients in person, as the pandemic and working from home have been stressful and negatively impacted many people’s musculoskeletal health. Now back to having in-person appointments with her patients, she is able to continue doing all she can to help them. Dr Drake does not practice conveyor belt care, telling us, “Every prenatal patient receives invaluable information emailed to them post initial appointment, and once past the due date, I follow up personally with each patient so that I may learn about their birth experience and then send them a complimentary postnatal chiropractor care voucher and an embroidered bib for the baby.” She continues, “I have made a point of getting to know fellow birth workers who work in complimentary areas so that I can personally recommend therapies, therapists and organisations.” Recently, Dr Drake visited Hawaii, USA in order to meet and learn from an eminent American homebirth obstetrician about breech birth. This is an area where mums have limited options when it comes to birth and Dr Drake wishes to help mums with breech presentations as much as possible. She is now in the process of organising for Dr Fischbein to come to Ireland to educate obstetricians, midwives, doulas, and other birth workers in the art of breech vaginal birth as she is passionate about bringing this lost skill back. Dr Drake is also going to be writing an e-book and hosting webinars about breech birth in Ireland to further educate those mums. As a result of increasing awareness and education in relation to breech birth, Dr Drake intends for her practice to bring to Ireland one of the world’s most experienced care providers in 2023. Alongside this, she continues to extend her own knowledge in regard to pregnancy, birth and postpartum by completing courses, reading books, and listening to podcasts, so she is always ahead of the curve and remains the expert. Not only is Dr Drake working hard on her chiropractic practice, but she is also working on her pregnancy and postpartum frozen food business, which will initially be launched in Ireland and then will be exported. Ultimately, it is clear to see how Drake Chiropractic has achieved such success within the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Awards 2022. With her dedication and compassion towards her patients and plans to be the most experienced in Ireland, there’s no denying that Dr Drake is the pregnancy chiropractor to go to.
